If the wait for the Dec. 21 North American release of Aquaman feels interminable, just be thankful you don’t live in Japan, where director James Wan’s film won’t arrive until February. On the plus side, however, a trailer has premiered in that country that turns up the guitar to 11.
A lean version of the trailer that premiered in July at Comic-Con International, it zeroes in on the central conflict between Jason Momoa’s Arthur Curry and his half-brother King Orin, played by Patrick Wilson, and strips out the lighthearted moments. It still delivers plenty of CGI undersea action, including warriors mounted on great white sharks and sea dragons.

Directed by James Wan, Aquaman stars Jason Momoa as Aquaman, Amber Heard as Mera, Patrick Wilson as Ocean Master, Willem Dafoe as Nuidis Vulko, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as Black Manta, Temuera Morrison as Thomas Curry, and Dolph Lundgren as Nereus. The film opens Dec. 21 in the United States, and Feb. 8, 2019, in Japan.
