“I got a chance to tell Frances McDormand how much I loved her and respected her and thought she was good in everything I’ve ever seen her in,” Nelson told THR.
The men behind Blade Runner 2049’s breathtaking visuals were honored for their work at the 2018 Academy Awards on Sunday, taking home the award for best visual effects. After the ceremony, John Nelson, one of the supervisors on the film, sat down with The Hollywood Reporter, Oscar in hand, to discuss his unforgettable night and run-in with best actress winner Frances McDormand backstage.
“We’re all still pretty high from last night. It’s a magic event and we had a really great time, and from the time you hear your name mentioned, you’re just chock-full of adrenaline,” Nelson told THR about his evening.
Nelson also opened up about his surprise meeting with one of the other winners that evening, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri star McDormand.
“I got a chance to tell Frances McDormand how much I loved her and respected her and thought she was good in everything I’ve ever seen her in,” he said. “I thought her moment where she put her Oscar down and all the women stood up was a really special moment. She’s great.”
Explaining how he encountered McDormand while they were backstage getting their statuettes engraved, Nelson said that the actress told him, “’Let’s kiss Oscars.’ And she took her Oscar and went ‘smooch.’ It was great.”
