According to TheHollywoodReporter, the character Bautista is set to play is a former guest of the island who is still being held there against his will. The character will serve as an enemy to Mister Roarke throughout the film. The original series, which aired on ABC for eight years after premiering with two TV movies, centered around Mister Roarke providing elaborate fantasies to the guests who came to his island, but often with a surprising twist.

The new film has been described as taking a cue from Westworld and Cabin in the Woods and will bring a more modern sensibility to the concept.

Fantasy Island is slated start production sometime in 2019.
