HBO’s Game of Thrones — whose schedule was such that it wasn’t a participant in the 2017 Emmy race — is back in contention, leading all series with a whopping 22 Emmy nominations including best drama and many creative arts categories that it has dominated in recent years.
Among those are a nomination for special visual effects, a category that the series has already won five times.
It’s also nominated for production design and makeup (non-prosthetic); Game of Thrones has four previous wins in both of these categories. Plus it's been shortlisted for prosthetic makeup (three wins), sound mixing (three wins) and sound editing (two wins).
This year, Game of Thrones has a trio of nominations for single-camera picture editing for a drama series. The nominees are Katie Weiland (nominated for “The Spoils of War” episode), Tim Porter (“Beyond the Wall”) and Crispin Green (“The Dragon and the Wolf”). Weiland won the Emmy for the series in 2015, and Porter claimed the trophy in 2016.
The Creative Arts Emmys will be handed out Sept. 8 and 9.
