The upcoming X-Men spinoff film Gambit has had an interesting development process thus far, to say the very least. The film, which is set to star Channing Tatum as everyone’s favorite Cajun mutant, Remy LeBeau, has run into its fair share of roadblocks on the way to the big screen.
Nevertheless, X-Men producer (and Dark Phoenix director) Simon Kinberg has asserted that the movie is, in fact, moving forward. Moreover, in a new interview with IGN, Kinberg stated that the film will be going for a rather unique tone when it comes to X-Men movies, describing Gambit‘s vibe as one of a “romantic or sex comedy.”

The producer went on to explain that he felt a character of Gambit’s temperament would be well-complimented by such a tone. “When you look at Gambit, he’s a hustler and a womanizer and we just felt like there was an attitude, a swagger to him, that lent itself to romantic comedy,” said Kinberg.
Kinberg also cited previous standalone films in the X-Men universe that broke off from the main series’ usual tone to better suit their lead characters. “Deadpool was an R-rated, raunchy comedy, Logan was a western, Gambit’s gonna be a romantic comedy, and New Mutants is very decidedly a horror film.”
For most fans, the term “romantic comedy” might be a red flag. This is something Kinberg is well aware of.
“You know, when I say romantic comedy, I use that term loosely, in the same term that I use the term western for Logan loosely,” said Kinberg. “It’s not like they’re gunslingers at high noon in Logan. It’s just a vibe. And I would say the vibe of Gambit has a romantic or sex comedy vibe to it. While it is also still very much a superhero movie with villains and heroes, as all these movies are.”

Elsewhere in the interview, Kinberg praised how the script for Gambit has come together thus far. Additionally, he made it clear that Fox will continue to actively work on their own Marvel films in spite of the impending Disney merger.
“Gambit has a great script and we’re looking to start that movie early next year,” said Kinberg. “Multiple Man, that script’s being worked on right now.”
In regard to X-Force, Kinberg added: “We’re just waiting for Drew Goddard to be done with releasing his film (Bad Times at the El Royale) that comes out in a few weeks, and then he’ll get started on that script to direct.”
Gambit is currently in development at 20th Century Fox.
