There was a lot of excitement surrounding the announcement that the Skywalker saga would continue more than thirty years following the conclusion of Return of the Jedi with Star Wars: The Force Awakens. The film was built around the mystery of a missing Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill), and of a map that would lead to his whereabouts. When Rey (Daisy Ridley) finally found him at the very end of the film, the last Jedi was on a remote planet, living in seclusion in the first Jedi Temple.
Luke had grown disenchanted with the idea of the Jedi, and the man who was once the new hope of an entire galaxy now found himself void of hope. He was a hermit, closed off from the Force and everyone else. Naturally, this led many fans to assume that the character spent all of his life alone, with no companion, wife, or any sort of love.
However, that’s not what actor Mark Hamill believes. On Twitter, a fan asked Hamill why Luke was never able to find love, to which the actor answered: “Maybe he did between Ep. 6 & 7. Many untold stories there.”

Of course, Hamill is referring to the three decades that separate Return of the Jedi and The Force Awakens. During that time, all that we know is that Luke built a new Jedi order — one that Kylo Ren eventually destroyed. But it’s quite possible that the character had time to find love during those years, and to share part of his life with someone.
Hamill has famously gone on record to state that he didn’t agree with Star Wars: The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson’s cynical portrayal of the character, and that Luke was always meant to be a beacon of hope. Clearly the actor has his very own idea of who the character is, and what he’s been through these past years.
However, the character’s story isn’t over yet. Although Luke died at the end of The Last Jedi, it’s since been confirmed that Hamill will return in Star Wars: Episode IX.
