Reboots and revivals have created some of the biggest success stories on the small screen in recent years, and Netflix has teamed up with DreamWorks to bring back none other than She-Ra. The animated series was announced back in December 2017 with a target release date of 2018, with few details available. Now, Netflix has released a premiere date along with four images from the upcoming series, and they indicate that this new take on She-Ra will be something quite different from what viewers got in the 1980s series. If you had any doubts that this new She-Ra would be just as epic as the original She-Ra, this first look at the new series' character may convince you. Sure, the animation style courtesy of Netflix and DreamWorks is a far cry from what viewers saw in 1985, but that's not necessarily a negative. This is a new She-Ra for a new era, and she could be great.
The show is officially titled She-Ra and the Princesses of Power, and it follows an orphan by the name of Adora. When she discovers a magic sword, it transforms her into the mythical warrior princess known as She-Ra, which comes in handy given evil Horde in control. During her journey, she finds a new family for herself in the rebellion, uniting a group of magical princesses. Together, they'll participate in the ultimate fight against evil, and it could take all of their powers combined. Based out of the capital of the land of Etheria, called Bright Moon Castle, the Rebellion has a mighty task ahead of them. Take a look at Bright Moon Castle:
The princesses may have to deal with an evil Horde and join forces to combat evil, but at least they'll be based out of a lovely location! It certainly looks like a fitting base for a Rebellion led by a princess with a magic sword. Adora won't be alone, and Netflix has released images of some of her peers as well. Here's a look at Adora with another character, named Catra:
No details are currently available about Catra on the Netflix show, but if she's similar to the Catra of the original She-Ra shows, she may be conflicted about the princesses. The original Catra was the Force Captain of the evil Horde who had the ability to transform into a panther. Judging by the image, the new Catra will at least share some qualities with her predecessor. While she and Adora don't exactly appear to be bosom buddies, they're not fighting. Could they be allies in the Netflix series?
This final picture shows what looks an awful lot like a magic sword in the hand of the character named Glimmer, who in the 1980s series was the Princess of Bright Moon who led the rebellion until Adora arrived, and Glimmer stepped down to allow Adora to take her place as leader. She also possessed light-based magic, which she apparently will have in the new series as well. Joining Glimmer and Adora in this photo is Bow. In the original show, he was an archer and longtime member of the rebellion. Judging by the quiver and arrows slung over his back, we can probably safely say that this Bow will fill a similar role.
We'll have to wait and see. She-Ra and the Princesses of Power will debut on Friday, November 16 at 12:01 a.m. PT on Netflix. In case that He-Man movie or another He-Man animated series never gets going, She-Ra and the Princesses of Power could be fabulous for fans of that universe.
