Ryan Murphy has a history of producing hit series on FX thanks to the American Horror Story and American Crime Story franchises, and he can now add one more FX project to his list of cable hits. The groundbreaking and gorgeous freshman series Pose has scored an order for a second season. Fans can rest easy for the rest of the first season with the knowledge that whatever happens in the finale, it won't be the end of the line for the show.
News of the renewal comes days before the penultimate episode of the first season hits the airwaves. It's too soon to say if Season 1 will end on a cliffhanger, but at least we know that the Season 1 finale won't double as a series finale. The show must go on, and go on it shall! Unfortunately, it's also too soon that know many details about what's to come in the second season. The second batch of episodes will release at some point in 2019. Fans can only cross their fingers and hope that the show will be back earlier rather than later next year.
Set in the 1980s, Pose has been critically acclaimed from the very beginning. Boasting the largest cast of transgender actors on television in series regular roles as well as the most expansive LGBTQ cast for a scripted series, Pose was guaranteed to earn a place in the TV history books no matter how well it was received. As it turns out, Pose was received quite well, and critics have been overflowing with praise, even despite some changes in cast and some scrapped storylines that definitely had potential to create buzz. Pose is a strong series that certainly deserves a sophomore season.
The ratings aren't the highest on television, so it's a very good thing that Pose is such a hit with critics. In Live+Same day calculations, Pose averages only 615,000 viewers and an 0.24 rating in the key 18-49 demographic, according to TV Series Finale. To compare, the latest season of Ryan Murphy's American Horror Story averaged 2.22 million viewers and a 1.10 rating, with the latest season of American Crime Story averaging 1.22 million viewers and an 0.37 rating.
That said, we shouldn't expect Pose to necessarily already draw the same numbers as other Ryan Murphy shows, and series on basic cable networks like FX don't require the same kind of ratings as broadcast networks to keep a show on the air. Besides, Pose has managed to actually improve its ratings, which isn't always possible for TV shows.
The penultimate episode of Pose Season 1 airs on Sunday, July 15 at 9 p.m. ET on FX. The episode will see Bianca making a shocking revelation about Lil Papi, and the House of Evangelista will be changed forever because of it.
