Siggraph: Animated Short 'Hybrids' Wins Best in Show

Awards

Dreamwork Animation's 'Bilby' grabs the jury's choice award.

CG confab Siggraph has revealed its Computer Animation Festival Electronic Theater award winners, which will be honored at the 45th Siggraph conference Aug. 12-16 at the Vancouver Convention Centre.

Best is Show was awarded to animated short Hybrids from Florian Brauch, Kim Tailhades, Matthieu Pujol, Yohan Thireau, Romain Thirion. It was a graduate project created at CG school MoPA in France.

As Siggraph is an Oscar qualifying festival, the short is now eligible for Academy Award consideration. Incidentally, 2018 animated short nominee Garden Party was also a graduate work from MoPA.

Many in the VFX community will have already seen Hybrids, as earlier this year it won the Visual Effects Society’s student award.

Also this year at Siggraph, the jury choice award will go to Dreamworks Animation’s Bilby, a touching story about a bilby that tries to protect a little bird from the dangers of the Australian outback. Helmed by Liron Topaz, Pierre Perifel, and JP Sans, the short recently premiered at the Annecy International Animation Festival.

Additionally, Siggraph will award its best student project honor to Overrun from Pierre Ropars, Antonin Derory, Diane Thirault, Jérémie Cottard, Matthieu Druaud, Adrien Zumbihl, a team from another France-based animation school, Supinfocom Rubika.

“We will be presenting a high caliber of work this year from a very competitive, international field of submissions,” said Siggraph Computer Animation Festival director Larry Bafia. “The work shown ranges from hyperreal to stylized, from student grad projects to small studio work, from large studio shorts to visual effects house showcases.”
