The horror genre is thriving, with franchises like Halloween continuing to show that they have potential to persist and try new things. However, one franchise that has remained dormant for quite a while is Evil Dead, which most recently appeared on the silver screen in 2013 when Fede Alvarez rebooted the series. Many fans have wondered when another Evil Dead movie could materialize, and Alvarez recently discussed that possibility and noted that the main reason we haven't seen another Evil Dead movie is that the folks behind the franchise haven't landed on a proper story yet. Addressing the status of the demonic cabin in the woods series, the Don't Breathe director explained:
Look, I love those movies. Making my Evil Dead was an amazing experience, it was my first film. So, going back at some point will be a possibility. I mean, I'm really good friends with all those guys, with Bruce, and Sam, and Rob (Tapert, who has produced all the Evil Dead movies). So, we always chat about it. The good news --- and I think that's what sometimes people don't understand --- is, none of those guys will make any of these movies just because they can, just because it's good business. They will only make it if they believe they have some good story to tell. A lot of people say that in this industry, but most of the time it's not true. With those guys, all of us involved in those movies, we will just make them if we believe there's a story that has to be told, and is awesome, and is great, and we believe that it will be better than anything that will be done before in that world. [When] we find that story, when we all agree on what it is, it will probably happen.
So, it looks like the lack of further Evil Dead movies does not stem from a lack of desire to make them. On the contrary, Fede Alvarez notes that Evil Dead insiders like Bruce Campbell, Sam Raimi, and Rob Tapert continue to show immense love for the franchise that they started all the way back in 1981with the release of The Evil Dead, and they don't want to make another film simply for the sake of rebooting the franchise. It's entirely possible that another Evil Dead movie could debut at some point in the future, but it will only happen when that creative team (plus Alvarez, if he remains involved) comes to a consensus over what the best course of action is for the series.
Of course, another element of this Evil Dead situation not noted in Fede Alvarez's remark to EW is the fact that some notable developments have taken place in the TV side of the franchise. Starz recently canceled Ash vs. Evil Dead, and Bruce Campbell officially stepped down as the chainsaw-wielding badass who started the franchise. Now, with Campbell seemingly retiring from the series' on-camera action, the stage has been set for a potential reboot or continuation of the story told in 2013 with Jane Levy's Mia. Alvarez has already noted that he would return for a follow-up to his 2013 movie if Uruguay wins the World Cup, so we will have to wait and see what happens.
