Hong Kong Film Awards 2018: 'Our Time Will Come' Leads Nominations With 11

The best director race has three female and two male contenders.

Director Ann Hui’s WWII-set drama Our Time Will Come led the 37th Hong Kong Film Awards nominations, which were unveiled Tuesday, with 11 nods, while actioner Paradox and Love Education, an exploration of romance, followed with nine each.

The Hui-helmed Our Time Will Come revolves around the underground resistance in Hong Kong during the Japanese occupation in the 1940s. It got nominations for best film, director, screenplay, actress for Zhou Xun, supporting actress for Deanie Ip, cinematography, film editing, art direction, costume and makeup design, original film score, and sound design. Hui is a five-time winner of the best director award, and this is the 13th time she has been nominated in this category.

Paradox lead Louis Koo garnered a best actor nomination for his performance. It could bring the prolific Hong Kong star his first win. Renowned Chinese director Tian Zhuang-Zhuang (The Blue Kite) is also nominated in the best actor category for his role as lead, in addition to his director and screenwriter work, in Love Education, his debut performance in front of the camera. Meanwhile, Sylvia Chang is nominated for her on-screen and behind-the-scenes work on the film — namely in the best director, screenwriter and actress categories.

The best director race shows a gender balance in the running for the Hong Kong award. Out of the five nominees, three are female directors.
