Tessa Thompson Wore a $10,000 Wig For Thor: Ragnarok Re-Shoots

Re-shoots for Marvel’s Thor: Ragnarok required at least one unusual expense: a $10,000 wig for Valkyrie actress Tessa Thompson.

According to The Huffington Post, the pricey accessory was necessary to keep Thompson’s appearance consistent with earlier footage. At the time, she was shooting the surrealist comedy Sorry to Bother You, in which her character Detroit wears short, bright orange curls. That’s a far cry from Valkyrie’s long, black locks, and she had dyed and styled accordingly. However, she had to reprise her Ragnarok role on the weekends: Although principal photograph on the Marvel Studios sequel was finished, Thompson was needed for re-shoots.

Boots Riley, writer and director of Sorry to Bother You, said the solution of putting Thompson into a Valkyrie wig cost Disney $10,000. While it’s understandable the company would look askance at that kind of price tag, Riley recounted apologizing to Raganarok director Taika Waititi, and receiving a relaxed response: “He was like, ‘It’s not my money!'”

Thanks to Ragnarok’s sizable budget, though, it appears that all ended well. Thompson managed to juggle roles in two successful movies, and her hair looked great in both.
