Warner Bros. Reportedly Wants a Female Director For Supergirl Movie

It was only a week ago that it was reported that a Supergirl film was currently in the early stages of development at Warner Bros. It has now been revealed that the studio wants to hire a female director to helm the Girl of Steel’s return to the big screen.

At this time, it has not been revealed exactly who is being considered for the job. However, a report from Deadline suggests that Warner Bros. is “very vocal about wanting to employ another female director for yet another strong female superhero.”

Following the massive success of the Patty Jenkins-directed Wonder Woman, DC and Warner Bros. have made it a point to start hiring more female directors to helm their projects, especially ones with female leads. Cathy Yan and Ava DuVernay have already been brought on board to direct Birds of Prey and New Gods, respectively. Furthermore, Warner Bros. are currently seeking a female director to take on Batgirl after Joss Whedon left the project.

With that in mind, it comes as absolutely no surprise that the studio is looking to continue this trend with Supergirl, who is easily in the same league as Wonder Woman when it comes to DC’s most iconic female heroes.

Moreover, while the character of Supergirl has made a big splash in recent years on her CBS/CW television series, this upcoming feature film will mark her very first live-action film appearance since 1984’s Supergirl, the critical reception for which was about on par with that of Superman IV (which is to say, not very good.)

In turn, Warner Bros. likely want to do everything in their power to make sure that they do the Girl of Steel justice on the silver screen this time around. And given the success of Wonder Woman, bringing a female director on board to take on such an illustrious female character certainly seems like a good start.

That said, the new Supergirl film is, once again, very early in its development and we likely won’t get an announcement as to who will be directing for a while. It has, however, been announced that Oren Uziel (22 Jump Street) is currently penning the film’s script.
